Maintenance – 06/18/2010 01:00 – 01:30 GMT

UPDATE: we’ve encountered problems after completing the release which have forced us to re-enter maintenance in order to troubleshoot. More information will be posted here as the situation progresses.

oDesk.com will be unavailable for about 30 minutes beginning 01:00 GMT, Friday, June 18, 2010 (Thursday, June 17, 6:00PM PST). This is one day later than the usual release window; we are doing it late due because of a problem with an upstream vendor during our normal release window.

As always, providers can continue to log time to the last team they were logged into during this maintenance window.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

  7. David says:

Why does oDesk ‘go down’ at all? For maintenance or otherwise? It isn’t 1990! Perhaps you should hire someone on oDesk to modernize your back-end infrastructure so that you never have to go offline ever again. ‘Hot-swapping’ software components isn’t rocket science and is standard common practice.

  8. Adam Walker says:

Perhaps these constant downtimes are because they “did” hire someone from oDesk :)

  9. John Ernest says:

hey its already june 24! why is the site still inaccessible!?

  22. Freelancer says:

Here we go again. Can you not put a notice on each page when you know maintenance is coming up? I had just clicked send on a long e-mail to an employer and now not only do I have to wait but also recompose.

    Uncool.

  23. Ryan says:

A few things that I think are important to note:

It’s pretty unprofessional of the oDesk development team to not have scheduled the maitenance.. especially when 100k+ buyers and providers need to be able to access their account immediately. This is a live 24/7 business community that is dependent on 100% uptime. Any _professional_ online company knows time scheduled maintenance is imperative even for critical fixes with at least several hours notice.

Secondly, oDesk did not send an e-mail to alert providers or buyers about the downtime and not being able to login for an indefinite (1+ hr) period of time. Still down.

Third, as noted by previous commenters, oDesk prides themselves on the contractors they have hired to build their infrastructure.. which is a pretty negative view of performance from the providers at oDesk.

What’s worse is they have not responded to the comments here expressing very valid concerns.

    No notifications on Twitter either.

I think I will reconsider using oDesk for critical projects in the future.

  24. junelle says:

i wish odesk would update their blog every time something like this happens. if there’s really nothing to say except “maintenance going on” then you probably shouldn’t give us a link to this – they’re full of old entries and just confusing!

  25. ben says:

    Well said Ryan

I can’t believe that this was posted on Friday, June 18th, 2010 at 1:06 am and now it is August 25! Over a month and a half?
I am glad I withdrew what I had in time and feel sorry for those who didn’t and have work to do. Not very professional at all.

  26. Amit says:

Hi, We are unable to log the time. I hope it will be resolved soon.

  27. pchuong says:

For me, oDesk down exactly 40 minutes, from 2PM to 2h40PM. Back to work :)

  28. vtweet says:

Y can’t we log on during this down time maintenance? It suppose to not affected.

  29. Rexaniel says:

2 successive maintenance in one week!!..why???

  30. Ryan says:

Down again.. not surprised in the slightest nothing has changed since I last posted.

I also submitted a support request asking them about some of the concerns here and they basically blew me off.
